THE PLANE CRASH OF OLGIATE OLONA (ITALY) OF JUNE 26, 1959

The educational project at “Dante Alighieri” school of Olgiate Olona

In order to provide continuity and sightedness to the memory of June 26, 1959, an educational project has been started in 2010 thanks to the intuition of Alberto Colombo supported by Beato Contardo Ferrini Institute and by the Municipality of Olgiate Olona. The project is addressed to the students in the eighth-grade of Dante Alighieri school and consists of: a multimedia conversation in the classroom about the historical fact and the commemorative events, dialog with the students, screening of the video of song Olgiate Olona, 26 Giugno 1959 composed by Nicola Puddu; production of a work written in Italian language follows. The works in poetry and prose are received anonymous; then they are selected and judged by a jury outside the school; the most deserving works - those which best reflect the historical fact and the commemorative events - are rewarded during the commemoration of June the 26. Because of their exceptional nature, some works received a Special award offered personally by Alberto Colombo with the authorization of Olgiate Olona mayor.

Works awarded school year 2019-2020

In 2020, the educational project in memory of the plane crash addressed to the 100 students in the eighth grade of Dante Alighieri school was carried out and completed before the pandemic revolutionized teaching activities and everyday life. Following are the texts and the classification of the deserving works of the students who - due to the pandemic - were awarded with a ceremony held on November 27, 2021.

First classified, the poem Un ricordo è per sempre by GABRIEL MAZZILLI:

Un ricordo è per sempre
(a memory is forever)

A memory is forever:
we just have to keep it alive.
A sad and dark inexplicable moment
which broke 70 lives in the most beautiful moment.
Dark smoke, thunder that breaks the sky...
and then the fire.
A plane hit, it breaks in the sky
and then nothing...
No explanation can fill the void.
Eyes to heaven, tears on the face,
the sadness of those who live the moment,
the anger and pain of those who will never forget,
because what remains is not only made of substance,
but it is also carved in the heart and mind.
Remembering is life, is history,
for those who were and for those who still are.

Second classified, the poem Passaggio by
RACHELE MARIA VITTORIA SCORDAMAGLIA FERRARI:

Passaggio
(passage)

Outside
gloomy and dark
impassible clouds;
suddenly a beam of light:
fear, everything is turning
while the rest is falling, the soul remains there, hanging.
I look down:
all is destroyed
scraps of broken lives...
embraced to the last hope, I turn around:
an immensity of light envelops me, smiling.
A door,
I go through...
I’m not alone:
sixty-nine more lives are with me
we are open to a new beginning.

Third classified, the poem 26 giugno by GIANLUCA ALBÈ:

26 giugno
(June 26)

A broken wing
never forgotten,
a memory of pain
carried in the heart.
A holly in memory
of this sad story,
the fragrant plant
always alive and painful,
grows in every season
remains in adoration
at the foot of the memorial
leaving a special memory
of seventy immortal lives
who put wings on in this place.
