THE PLANE CRASH OF OLGIATE OLONA (ITALY) OF JUNE 26, 1959

The educational project at “Dante Alighieri” school of Olgiate Olona

In order to provide continuity and sightedness to the memory of June 26, 1959, an educational project has been started in 2010 thanks to the intuition of Alberto Colombo supported by Beato Contardo Ferrini Institute and by the Municipality of Olgiate Olona. The project is addressed to the students in the eighth-grade of Dante Alighieri school and consists of: a multimedia conversation in the classroom about the historical fact and the commemorative events, dialog with the students, screening of the video of song Olgiate Olona, 26 Giugno 1959 composed by Nicola Puddu; production of a work written in Italian language follows. The works in poetry and prose are received anonymous; then they are selected and judged by a jury outside the school; the most deserving works - those which best reflect the historical fact and the commemorative events - are rewarded during the commemoration of June the 26. Because of their exceptional nature, some works received a Special award offered personally by Alberto Colombo with the authorization of Olgiate Olona mayor.

Works awarded school year 2014-2015

In 2015, the educational project in memory of the plane crash was addressed only to one class of students in the eighth grade of Dante Alighieri school: therefore only five deserving works were selected for the final classification. The following are the translations of the works rewarded during the commemoration of June 26, 2015.

First classified, the poem Fuoco, fumo e disperazione by NICOLE GOBBO:

Fuoco, fumo e disperazione
(fire, smoke and despair)

The darkness arrived,
it began to rain,
the sky brightened.
I looked up,
I saw fire, smoke, despair,
a red whirl invaded the minacious clouds.
I was abandoned, all alone,
it was the fatal moment,
the last breath of 70 lives.
I woke up,
wrapped by scents and graceful faces,
I was in heaven,
no longer alone,
now I shine in the sky,
I’m not frightened anymore.
And from the star
where I stand
I see the remains of the disaster.
They still remember
...June 26, 2015

Second classified ex aequo, the poem I miei pensieri by CHIARA GRAZIANI:

I miei pensieri
(my thoughts)

You didn’t think you would have died,
You didn’t think you would have flown to heaven.
You had a destination,
but it wasn’t the one you reached.
You thought you would have embraced your loved ones,
but you hadn’t even seen them.
You are angels in the sky
who look down here
where the dreams stopped for the reality.
You are like stars
who guide us in this life
and who tell us:
«Live today because
maybe tomorrow will not come,
live today as if
it were the last day of your life».
You give us the courage,
the strength and the will
to go on and
to believe in our dreams.
We are here for you,
we are here to remember,
we are here to commemorate,
we are here to testify our solidarity.
Your seventy lives have gone to heaven
but your soul is alive in us
who are here to remember.

Second classified ex aequo, the poem Cielo e terra ricordano... by ELEONORA RUSSO:

Cielo e terra ricordano...
(sky and earth remember...)

Seventy immortal lives,
will never be forgotten
in that plane crash
of June 26, 1959.
They are angels in the sky,
we are here on earth to pray.
They are stars shining in the sky
and every year they shine ever more.
And you, lightning, you struck that plane,
with the poor child in the womb
of his mother who will never see him;
just a smile in heaven
on their faces.
We are on this earth
and you are up in the sky,
every year we remember
husbands, sons...
you will always be in our dear hearts!
Seventy immortal lives,
will never be forgotten
in that plane crash
of June 26, 1959.

Second classified ex aequo, the poem Un giorno fatale by ALESSANDRA ESMERALDI:

Un giorno fatale
(a fatal day)

70 lives, 70 plans
and more than thousand dreams
more than thousand hopes.
June 26, 1959,
a day that wasn’t so obvious
a day in which the fate commanded.
The body lies on the ground
but the soul has flown in the sky.
And you, lightning,
you are an accomplice of the nature
you don’t care of their future life.
Loud screams
of sorrow and tears,
insecurity and fear
all because of a disaster.
You had no choice,
the fate had already
led you to death.

Second classified ex aequo, the poem 26 giugno 1959 by ALESSANDRO FALCO:

26 giugno 1959
(June 26, 1959)

Its flight began with spread wings
but a pitiless lightning
struck it ruthlessly
and hurled it to the ground.
Aid and research
served to nothing
nobody survived
and has left a void in his loved ones
and an indelible memory
because every year on June 26th
they will be remembered
and the memory
will always be alive.
