Today, we look back 65 years to the horrible plane accident that took 70 lives. As always, it is of considerable consolation to the affected families that the people of Olgiate Olona make such special effort to remember and honor those who perished in this horrible event. Our family remembers our visit to the memorial ceremony ten years ago and the comfort we felt being part of it. We are forever grateful to the people of Olgiate Olona and to all those to help preserve the memory of victims. With deepest gratitude,

What hell did mean to my dad Antonio - that fateful June 26, 1959 -, for me has always been a story told since my young age, a sad story of 70 immortal victims. Thanks also to him, these 70 victims are still immortal. I’m not good with words so please forgive me, but now he too is with them to watch over us, and as you will surely keep his historical memory alive so I will do too, because this is what great men do: they teach and leave us a piece of them to remember and keep alive. My dad considered you like a big family, and indirectly in everyday life you also became the same for us, thanks to his stories and events. He loved each of you, by feeling – since the very first moments - a great bond born from a dramatic event, from the hell of that night that was lived with difficult memories for part of his life, then turned into a source of pride: having become a historical memory, taking away a little anguish from the memory. As a son I lost a great man and it will be my duty to carry on his memory. To conclude, a big heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you of the committee of June 26, 1959, to all those who sent a message, to those who attended the funerals, to those who remembered him: THANKS TO ALL REALLY! A beautiful phrase that I have read that represents my father a lot is “blue skies, great man”. Now, aviation - his passion - and that tragic day both have to do with flying: he will fly watching over us.
Andrea and Elena, Antonio Monti’s son and daughter, Italy

Dear All: the Armanetti and Capozzi family express their condolences to the family of Antonio Monti. His heartfelt selfless service as a firefighter present that fateful day of June 26, 1959, is a testament to the infinite connection we all share. I am grateful I had the opportunity to meet him in person at the 50th Commemoration back in 2009, which I attended with my brother, Leonardo. Grazie Antonio! Pace e Bene,
Angelo Capozzi, The Netherlands - Grandson of Leonardo Armanetti

Antonio Monti. So very, very sad this incredibly wonderful man passed away Sunday morning, October 25th. He was a first responder at the TWA Flight 891 crash in Olgiate Olona, Italy on June 26, 1959 of which my father, Frank W. Ellis, was the First Officer. Susan and I first met Antonio in 2010 at the service for the victims and families of the crash when our interpreter, Federica Baù told us a man wanted to meet us. He put his arms around us, hugged us tightly, said something in Italian and walked away. She then told us he was the firefighter pictured on the cover of Alberto Colombo’s book, Il disastro aereo del 26 Giugno 1959 a Olgiate Olona. Over the next 10 years through e-mails, Facebook, messenger, Google Translator and our annual visits to Italy we came to know and love him as family. He referred to us as his daughters and when he put his arms around us I felt through him the love of my father who I had never known. He is now reunited with his beloved Marisa and infant son. My deepest condolences to his son, Andrea, and his daughter, Elena, their families and Antonio’s many friends. Forever you are in my heart. Rest In Peace dearest Antonio.
Kathleen Ellis, USA - relative of Frank W. Ellis

October 27, 2020

I’m the nephew of my aunt Sophia Doumouras. I never met her, I was born a year later. I think one day I want to travel to Italy, come to your town and meet the mayor and the people because of the wonderful job you guys done over the years which I just discovered. July 10, 2020
Thank you for the recent video & other information you have circulated about the 1959 air disaster. While it was difficult to watch, it was also comforting to see the care, effort and concern extended by so many of your town’s residents to the victims of the plane crash. It was touching that so much was provided to the victims, people unknown to those providing assistance at the site. We were also sorry to hear of the death of Giuseppe Cerana. We met Mr. Cerana when we attended the Memorial Service in 2014. My family toasted him today while the song, Olgiate Olona 26 Giugno 1959 by Panama Bus played. Salud a tutti! Thank you all for the continuing attention & reverence you continue to show to those who were impacted by the air disaster. We appreciate all your efforts on behalf of our loved ones. With deepest gratitude,
George Clam, USA - Relative of the Rey & Fuda families

So sad we were unable to travel to Italy this year for this 61st anniversary of TWA flight 891 disaster. Susan and I have been blessed to have been in attendance and participated in the ceremonies each year since 2010. Missing all of our wonderful friends and the Olgiate Olona community we have come to love as family. Thank you all for continuing to remember the souls onboard and their families. Thank you and hugs especially to Nicola Puddu, Alberto and Anna Columbo, Antonio Monti, Maria Enrica Ciserani and Roberto Peschiera, Don Lueke, Federica Baù, Olgiate Olona Mayor Dr. Giovanni Montano and past Mayor Giorgio Volpi.

Today is the 61st anniversary of our father’s passing. I am especially reflective since Kathy and I can’t be together, nor are we sharing the memorial service in Olgiate Olona, Italy, with the «familia» we have met over the past 10 years. I am so grateful that out of such tragedy came a beautiful connection to the town and its people who took such care to preserve the memory of my father and those aboard TWA flight 891. Our hearts are with you, today and always.
Susan Ellis, USA - relative of Frank W. Ellis

We are eternally grateful for your continued remembrance of those who died. We sincerely hope that you and all the people of Olgiate Olona remain healthy and that life will soon return to normal. Dear Staff, on the occasion of the commemoration of 60th anniversary of the plane crash of June 26, 1959, as per tradition, a great preparatory work of history, memory and culture was done. It is a project that links the value of human existence with infinity with a very thin thread. A dramatic event that - thanks to you - has become an institutional moment that links faith to memory. Thanks to you, to the school, to the students, to all the guests who came from all over the world and to those who share this memory, always aimed towards the future. With appreciation,
Alda Acanfora, Italy

June 27, 2019
Yesterday, June 26, 2019, in the beautiful Ancient Collegiate Prepositural church of St. Stephen and Lawrence, the ceremony of the 60th anniversary of the plane crash of Olgiate Olona took place. A heartfelt thanks to those who committed - this year too - to remember the seventy lives tragically perished that terrible Friday afternoon. May these seventy lives rest forever in peace, together with the many rescuers who rushed to the scene. A warm hug to the living relatives of the victims. Thanks to rescuers of the time still alive. As Monsignor Luca Raimondi reminded in his homily, it is our duty to keep the Memory alive, because there cannot be a Present nor a Future without Memory.
Salvo Ruotolo, Italy

June 26, 2019

June 26, 2019
Good morning, I’m very late, but I have just found your website and I’m becoming aware of your initiative. I want to share with you a little anecdote, it happened about 25 years ago. At that time I was working in Gorla Minore and, talking with some customers, I was told about the plane crash and the existence of the memorial monument. I was intrigued, so I went to see and I found it in a state of complete abandonment and not very accessible, due to the vegetation that had invaded the site. It was more or less this period, perhaps towards the middle of June and, reading the engraving on the tombstone, I realized that there would have been the anniversary in a few days. I was saddened by the fact that no one kept the memory of the event alive by taking care of the memorial, so I decided to make a small initiative on my own: I did some cleaning of the vegetation in order to get closer to the monument easily, and, on June 26, I brought some flowers in memory of the victims. For this reason I congratulate you, for bringing to people’s attention what happened a long time ago, and for your commitment. Regards,
Paolo Raimondi, Italy

June 25, 2019

I will not attend the commemoration but you and the victims are all in my heart. Thanks.

Dears, after reading your communication in subject we are stunned: unfortunately, it is no longer enough to know the Italian language to understand what reported, it is also essential to know the bureaucracy. We cannot express any opinions and judgments since we do not know in details the matter. But we are really sorry to perceive that the activity of some of you is being questioned, not for the quality of the work, but for procedural reasons. In any case we want to thank all those who have worked in the recent years to give worthy memory to our beloved ones. If we could be useful, in some way, in overcoming the problem that has arisen, we would be happy to give you our modest help. We hope to meet you soon, and once more we heartily thank all the staff.
Maria Enrica Ciserani (daughter of one of the seventy immortal lives) and Roberto Peschiera, Italy

CHRISTMAS 2017
This year, Christmas ... we all are Christmas
We who ... it’s not just the here and now, but there’s also a then
We who don’t raise our voice, nor we live in rancor
We who want to leave our children a better world
We who instead of giving answers, we prefer to ask ourselves questions
We who at least once in a while, we still feel a great emotion
We who despite the fatigue, we never say how tired we are
We who are not frightened by our wrinkles and white hair
This year, Christmas for me ... is you too
You who push me to believe that I can always do a little more
You who listen to me, read me, criticize me and never get tired of doing it
You that if you do not find a meaning to things, you do not give up and go looking for it
You who think you are doing a little and discover that your little is so much
You that if you were not there, I would miss you and you don’t know how much
You who take me by the hand and push me forward when we meet a climb
You who fight every day because it takes strength and commitment to live this life
This year, Christmas ... it’s me too, a little
Me with my endless search for God
Me that every day I ask myself “Who am I?
Me that I look for music and harmony in the midst of the noise
I wish us, you, me imagined that Christmas is every day
I wish the spark of a star accompanied departures and returns
I wish the path that we live in and that we all call life
Like a garden of flowers, were resided by the imprints of our hearts and fingers

I am not from Olgiate Olona nor even am I Lombard, but often I stop in Via 26 giugno street, and I try to imagine the terrible sequence of that tragic Friday late afternoon. What were Prof. Maria Fermi Sacchetti’s last thoughts? What little Mary Belknap was doing, a moment before the plane broke at high altitude?
What happened on June 26, 1959, amply deserved to be put on paper. And for this reason I greatly appreciated both books of Alberto Colombo. The first one, Il disastro aereo del 26 giugno 1959 a Olgiate Olona, has - among the many merits – a huge note apparatus of 45 pages! Really commendable. It is a pity to read in Chapter Ten that the memorial monument was, for a certain time, a bit neglected. It would be nice for us to consider all the victims of that damned early summer Friday as our relatives. As a sort of friends. After all, as Dino Buzzati beautifully wrote «(...) the blame is a thunderstorm of our own home, made up of our clouds, of Italian lightning and thunder, indeed Lombard (...)».
My thoughts are not only for all the victims, but also for all their families who during all these years have lived together with the memory of the tragic end of their loved ones. I express my thanks for what you have done so far, and still do, to keep the memory of June 26, 1959, alive.
Salvo Ruotolo, Italy

Dear Staff, thank you for sharing such a significant testimony (with reference to Vanessa Veleris’ message of October 8, 2017, ed.). This is yet another confirmation of the humanity and sensibility which are inspiring you. Behind these researches, behind these letters there are always people who - although to a different extent - have suffered the loss of a loved one. I’m grateful as a Mayor but firstly as citizen and man for your constant work to keep the memory alive.
Giovanni Montano, Italy - Mayor of Olgiate Olona

October 8, 2017
My husband and I just returned (yesterday) from a trip to Italy and Greece. Based on your email, we visited the memorial about 10 days ago. It was an overwhelming experience for me, and I want to thank you for being the impetus that prompted me to make the journey. I never knew my grandmother, and visiting the memorial made her a “real person” for me. Please let me know if there will be other dedications made at this site. Thank you.
Vanessa Veleris, USA - relative of Georgia Chioles

Dear people of Olgiate Olona... What can we say?! Attending the yearly commemoration dedicated to our beloved ones always arouses an infinity of emotions. Although the event has to be classified among the tragic ones, the joy you are able to convey to all of us is what emerges more and more in my heart, year after year. Through your constant commitment, through the freshness and pleasantness of the kids in their eighth grade classes, through the support of the municipal administration, you continue to give us this moment of renewed meeting where we can enjoy your availability almost confidential, the jokes of Mr. Antonio, the contagious smiles of Ellis sisters, the exchange of words and feelings with many of the participants. ... What can we say?! THANK YOU, infinitely THANKS.
Maria Enrica Ciserani and Roberto Peschiera, Italy - relatives of Paolo Ciserani

We want to thank you again for remembering the families of this horrible day. As my mom joins her family she dearly missed, this day will always be a day we will never forget, and we will come together as a family knowing that our mother is smiling, holding her family in heaven very close, and they see that all the special friends in Italy never forget this day. Thank you again.

Mr. Alberto Colombo, it’s with great pleasure that I’m reading your email, and the reason why it is making me happy is because I’ve always been attracted by this story. The fact is that every time I happened to be passing by the memorial monument I always said my little prayer for those who perished in that place.

I’m learning now the sad news of the passing away of Ann Clam. I’m really, really saddened for my dear Ann. She was so close to me when I was with my grief for the loss of my wife, now it’s like I have lost a sister, my dear Ann. Now you are in Heaven with my Marisa, may God give some comfort to your beloved ones as you did with me from so far away. I embrace you, I will never forget you.
Antonio Monti, Italy

Dear Alberto and Nicola, I wanted to let you know that my mother Ann Rey Clam passed away yesterday morning. While we will all miss her dearly, she is out of pain now. She told me she has had a wonderful life and was ready to be reunited with her family that she has missed for so long. Thank you for your part in bringing such joy to her final years. With love and gratitude,

(...) I would like to thank you for having organized an association that commemorates the TWA crash of 1959 near Milano. I happened to be searching for some information about my father, Michael Martino Jr., a few weeks ago when I was directed by Google to your site. I was greatly moved and sent your article about my parents to my family in the U.S.. I am now trying to convince them to come to one of your commemoration ceremonies in the near future (...) My husband and I are two years away from retirement, so for sure we will be present for the 60th anniversary,

My heartfelt, deep, deep appreciation for all of the work and dedication of those honoring the passengers of flight 891 TWA which crashed on June 26, 1959 near the Agnese Farm by Olgiate Olona, near Busto Arsizio. Dear [Alberto Colombo, Ed.], I have seen (and seen again...) the video. I’m excited. And Cardinal Martini’s words are meaningful and clear as usual. For me it’s a great opportunity to know Paolo Pettinaroli through this witness further enriched by the words of his wife. It’s really a beautiful work, thanks to you, to Nicola, to those who walk together with the aim of enriching the community; identity is being built and is strengthened through these moments too. Heartfelt thanks again.

July 23, 2014
The disaster of the MH17 is a national tragedy without precedent here in the Netherlands. The first bodies have arrived here this afternoon. Nearly 200 Dutch victims, the others are from 5-6 different nations. Is there anything we can do together as a gesture of solidarity? Looking at today’s arrival of the victims and solidarity of the Dutch people I started to cry for the first time thinking about my grandfather that I never knew. In this case these poor families do not even have a place where they can commemorate, a place that is far away and in the midst of a war which still tells us that violence is useless. Warm regards.
Angelo Capozzi, The Netherlands - relative of Leonardo Armanetti

Sadly, I won’t be able to join you all this year, but I will think of my grandfather, and all the other passengers and crew who died in this terrible tragedy, on the 26th June. In January of this year, my mum, Jennifer Marchand, sadly passed away. I lost a bit of my heart and soul... I’m sure that my mum is now reunited with her parents and that, wherever they are, they are looking after me, all my family and especially my son, Samuel. Next year, I hope that we will be able to come to Olgiate Olona, and meet you all again. Special thanks to Nicola and Alberto who are working hard to keep all those lost memories alive. Bless you.

Lovingly,

To my regret I could not be present at the presentation of the website. I visited it with attention (and also with a little of melancholy): once again I wish to express, on behalf of my entire family, a huge thank you for the work you have done. I’m touched, mainly when I think about what has been done to make this possible.

I cannot express how emotional all of my family and friends are at the wonderful outcome of your hard work on the website. Hours and hours already spent on it has been informative, interesting and a tribute to your research. To know about the others on the ill-fated flight touches my heart. I wish to thank you again, Nicola and all who contributed to the site. I have passed it on to many family, friends and interested people. My deepest regards to you, Alberto, the people of Olgiate Olona and your mayor for all your thoughtful work to make this possible.

My Dear Nicola and Alberto, mayor Volpi and the people of Olgiate Olona, I have been reading the website of the air crash of June 26, 1959 and it has filled me with emotions that are too numerous to explain. The website is so beautifully expressed and written and informative beyond my initial expectations. I cannot thank you sufficiently for your time and efforts put into this site. The beautiful writings of your school children also lingers in my heart. Thank you all for the chance to be able to express my sincere love and gratitude to all of you.

How hard you have worked. The website you created is perfect. Your labor of love has created a memorial that shows the value of each person no matter how small - and that every act of love counts - even when unseen by others. I was truly impressed with the writings the children had done and the hope for the future you have created. Your courage, devotion and love shall always be remembered.
